Lucifer
August 17th
“Liebling, are you ready?” Maman called from downstairs.
“Yeah,” he replied, running down the stairs, tugging at the collar of his suit. His Maman was nowhere to be found. He felt a hand on his shoulder, “Have you done your hair yet?”
“Yes?”
“Can you fix it a little more, please?” Without waiting for his response, Maman rushed off to another room. He wanted to go back to his room, but he wasn’t going to put himself through the torture of walking up the stairs again in his stiff suit. Kassity ran down the stairs with Griffin in tow. She halted in front of him, causing Griffin to collide with her. After they regained balance, Kassity turned to him, “Lucifer, did you do your hair?” He rolled his eyes, “Yes, I did my hair.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive.” Kassity herself had pulled her hair into a slicked back ponytail. Kassity shrugged in response and ran off into another room.
“Schatz! Where are you?” Maman called out. His Maman then ran up to him, “Lucifer, have you seen your sister anywhere?”
“She went that way,” he said pointing to the right. She ran again. Father then came down the stairs and scowled when he saw him. “Has anyone told you to fix your hair yet? It looks atrocious.”
Lucifer sighed, “I’ll fix it in the car.”
Father grimaced, “Where’s your mother?”
Lucifer pointed to the right again. Father nodded. “It’s time to go! We are running late.” Father then walked out the door without looking to see if anyone followed. Everyone, of course, appeared in the foyer. Even his Maman, who was still messing with Kassity’s hair, twirling her ponytail into a bun.
Everyone was in the car and they were speeding down the road. Griffin grabbed Kassity’s hand while she was looking out the window. Even though they made him want to throw up sometimes, they were sweet.
“Come on, I have two minutes until I have to give my speech.” Father said, ushering everyone out of the car. Why lawyers had to give speeches for mayors was unbeknownst to him, but Father did it a lot. “Remember, stoic smiles.” Then almost all eyes turned to him, “Really? Your hair is a mess. I told you to fix it.” Father gritted out. Lucifer shrugged. “We’ll talk about this later.” Kassity narrowed her eyes at Lucifer, while Griffin gave him a small smile. He brushed past them. He didn’t have the energy to care. Everyone else's nerves and hurried paces had jumbled his emotions up.

Father stepped on the stage. After ‘Hello everyone,’ he’d zoned out. Kassity bumped his shoulder and Lucifer sent her a glare. She shot him a warning look. He inwardly sighed.
He had to do this.
He looked at the camera, shoved his hands into his pants pockets, and gave a small smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
When Father finished his speech, he exited the stage first passing in front of all of them. When walking past him, Father gave him an angry glare.
It was time to mingle, shake hands, and kiss babies, or something like that. “Ah, Lucifer! You’ve grown up so much, so handsome. How are you doing?”
“Amazing,” he answered dryly. The woman put a hand to his face. He flinched away, “I have to go get something to drink.” He didn’t know why people kissed up to him. Like Father would listen to him about who he should give him money to.
One thing Lucifer did like about these parties was the wine. If he was going to be here with all these people, why not be slightly tipsy? Besides everyone's antsy and high strung emotions were getting to him, giving him a major headache. He took a sip then put the glass down. Watered down. He sighed. He’d have to wait until he got home.
“Lucifer!” He turned. It was Kassity. “What?”
“I told you! He’s angry now, he’s going to yell at you when we get home.”
“And?”
She narrowed her eyes at him, “You’re being self destructive.”
“And you’re being annoying.” He picked his glass up and walked away from her. Someone ruffled his hair. He almost swung. “Woah, Lucifer.” It was Griffin. “Why are you so stressed tonight?” Griffin asked.
Lucifer shrugged. Griffin took the glass from him, “I’m going to take this from you. It tastes bad anyway, and I’m pretty sure, from your face, you want more than wine.”
Kassity went to Griffin’s house for the night. Father cornered him in the dining room. “What the hell was that Lucifer?” Lucifer shrugged. “Your image reflects on me! You are a liability Lucifer.”
That's what Lucifer always had been. A liability.
“Your hair was a mess, your hands were in your pockets, and you weren’t even looking at the camera!” He shrugged again. Father grabbed him by his collar and Maman put her hand to her mouth. “What do you have to say for yourself? You made us all look bad.” Father yelled. He looked Father in his eyes, “I don’t care.”
Father let go of him and turned to Maman. “That is your child. You deal with him.” Father walked away muttering things about insubordination.
“Liebling, why won’t you just listen? One day you’re going to get hurt. Wer nicht hören will, muss fühlen. Say it.”
“Wer nicht hören will, muss fühlen.”
“Please Lucifer. If you don’t want to listen, you have to feel. Understand?”
He nodded. Maman smoothed his hair down, “Good, now get some sleep, you look tired.”
He slowly walked up the steps to his room.
Art wasn’t going to save now.
