Colored Knowledge

Kiearri Mullins

Is the best knowledge.

‘Why is that?’ half of the people ask,

I say that, because the majority of the world think we can control

How we are, how we look, and how we act.

They call us monkeys and savages for how dark our skin is.

They either hang us, torture us, or enslave us–

Taking us away from freedom and reality.

We are broken to the survival at its finest,

We are miserable at the lack of acknowledgment

As people had overlooked us.

There’s no humanity.

They paint us to look like them, to compete with them,

And to acknowledge them, but at what cost?

They murdered our homeland, kidnapped us, and taught us English

Just so we can be their little money makers.

It’s sickening.

I say this, because there’s still racism in this world–

Even after the many protests that happened.

They still shoot and overlook the bodies,

They still hate us for the color of our skin–

Yet they want to be just like us.

Wanting to wear the same hairstyles,

Say the same word they can’t say anymore,

The same trends we created first.

And yet they want to take all the credit

For something they didn’t even do.

As they say ‘knowledge is power’

And so is colored gain.

There’s still more of us here living today

And that’s a blessing itself.
