Take My Heart
Aubrey Auert
1: ‘Take My Heart’
“Here, take my hands,” I tell him. He held them for a moment before setting them on a shelf to collect dust. “Do you want my mouth?” He sewed it shut. Take my brain. It would orbit him like the moon orbits the Earth. He’d rather look at the Sun.
The skin between my breasts rips. I can’t hold it together without my hands. My sternum cracks open. I can’t scream without a mouth. My beating heart tears from my vessels and rolls out onto the floor before him. He looks at it, then at me, then he walks away.
